These ants are large reddish-brown ants about 1/4 to 1/2 inches long, they
usually nest outdoors in stumps, trees, railroad ties, rotted wood where
moisture is plentiful and food is close by.
They may enter homes in search of food or water and will sometimes set
up satellite colonies inside homes, especially if they located water damaged
wood or insulation. The most common areas in the home are window and
door frames, and near plumbing areas. These ant do not eat wood , but will
excavate galleries in it to rear their young, since damaged wood is easier to
excavate.
When encountering carpenter ants in the home it needs to be determined if
a satellite nest is in the home or outside. These ants can travel 300 to 400
feet between the main nest a satellite nest or to just forage for food. The
satellite nest is usually in a little drier location and may contain workers,
larvae and eggs.
When you see a few carpenter ants in the home it could be just foragers or
the beginning of a satellite nest, trying becoming established. A good
inspection helps to determine what could be happening starting with the
outside. Entry points could be hose bibs, phone boxes, timer boxes, cable
TV wires, power lines coming into the home, at fence too close or attached
to the home, tree branches touching the home.
